Presenter - Richard Hirstwood

9.00 - 9.30 Tea/coffee on arrival

9.30 - Introductions

9.45 - Something to say! - In this session we will look at why communication is the most important skill you will ever learn. This fun and interactive session will study the pre-requisite sensory skills to effective communication.

10.45 - Tea/Coffee

11.00 - We will look at how children and adults communicate and their communication styles. Sensory loss or our inability to modulate sensory information will affect our communication abilities. So as with learning styles people communicate in many different ways. We will look at techniques with and without sensory equipment which help you develop your skills assisting your children or sstudents to become better communicators.

12.00 - We will begin to go through some of the sensory communication tools. Can we use sensory equipment when developing communication skills? Projectors and bubble tubes can be used but a sensory approach to communication is also about using cheap toys and torches.

12.30 - Lunch

1.30 - Being a sensory detective - Where do we start? With assessments is the answer! So this session will look at varied assessment formats from the ACA, Routs and visual, hearing and learning styles assessments. This session will not make you an assessment expert but it will teach you how to use investigation sheets to help create the starting points for your target setting.

2.30 - Using video and demonstration you will see how it all comes together. To understand how to set a goal you must have the baseline information and be able to communicate to the child or student.
