'Establishing Interactive Play'

This practical workshop is interactive with opportunities to engage with materials focussing on:

  • using an interactive play approach to develop communication and social skills with pupils who have autism, PMLD or SLD
  • the therapeutic benefits of play in helping to establish meaningful relationships and emotional well-being
  • hands-on activities that show how to create a connection with a child
  • how interactive play can bring about significant changes in learning and behaviour

Interactive Play recognises how positive engagement between a child and a play partner is the basis for the development of social understanding, communication and emotional well-being. Interactive Play provides opportunities for pupils with autism, PMLD or SLD to learn using a kinaesthetic approach which remains key to how they develop knowledge and understanding of their environment. The workshop focuses on how schools and child care settings can establish interactive play sessions to create positive relationships, create opportunities for learning and social interaction with peers.
