‘Developing
individualised sensory focussed activities for special
learners’
Mandy Williams, Occupational Therapist
“Your
world is what your senses tell you it is. The limitation of
your senses set the boundaries of your conscious
existence…”
*(1)
Some
special learners need a lot of assistance in order to
participate in any activity. They enjoy the immediate, the
“here and now “and do not understand that activities have
outcomes or end results. Planning for, and using individual
sensory activities, can enable a person to be a more active
participant in a way that is more meaningful to them. It
also provides more opportunities for interactive
communication with the world around.
Content will include:
The role of the senses
A dip into non intentional and intentional communication
Strategies to enhance participation
Methods of evaluating sensory preferences and skills
How to make an activity ‘sensory-focused'
Planning and implementing sensory-focused
programmes/activities/multi sensory
environments
Audience
Educators and therapists working with learners who require
a multi sensory approach and with particular interest to
those working with young students and adults with multi
sensory needs.
